Vaccines FAQs

What are pet vaccines?

Vaccines are health products that protect your pet from infection. They’re designed to stimulate your pet’s immune system to combat deadly diseases. Some vaccines prevent diseases while others reduce the symptoms of a disease so your pet doesn’t get extremely ill. Vaccines also prevent diseases from spreading to other pets or to pet owners, protecting your health and the health of your neighbors and their pets as well.

What’s the difference between core and non-core vaccines?

Pet vaccines can be divided into two categories: core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are the most important, as they protect your pet from highly contagious diseases that can lead to death. Core vaccines for dogs are those that protect them from rabies, distemper, canine adenovirus, and canine parvovirus. Core vaccines for cats include rabies, feline parvovirus, feline calicivirus, and feline herpesvirus.

Some pets are prone to certain diseases due to where they live or their lifestyle. Non-core vaccines protect your pet against these health risks.

When should I vaccinate my pet?

Baby pets get a series of vaccines that can start around six to eight weeks of age. They’ll receive boosters every two to four weeks after their initial round until they reach 14 to 16 weeks of age. Afterwards, we’ll put your dogs or cats on a vaccination schedule to ensure they stay protected in the years to come. Baby pets need extra protection as their immune systems are still developing.

Why should I vaccinate my pet?

Like people, pets are susceptible to catching infectious diseases. Some of these diseases have no cure. Some diseases can be transmitted from your pet to you or other members of your family or other pets in your neighborhood. By vaccinating your furry friend, you not only protect your pet, you protect yourself, your family, and other animals your pet comes into contact with. You also improve your pet’s chances of living a longer, healthier lifespan.
