What Are Pregnancy Ultrasounds?

Pregnancy ultrasounds are a noninvasive way to check on your pet's developing litter. Our ultrasound technician will place a gel on your pet's abdomen and then gently glide a wand-like transducer over the area. The transducer emits sound waves that create an image of the puppies or kittens inside the womb on a computer screen.

Pregnancy ultrasounds are usually done around day 28 of the pregnancy, but sometimes they may be done earlier if there are concerns about the pregnancy. For example, if your pet is carrying multiple puppies or kittens, an early ultrasound can help us count how many there are so we can plan for their delivery.

What Are the Benefits of Pregnancy Ultrasounds?

Pregnancy ultrasounds give us a chance to check on the overall health of your pet's pregnancy. We can check to make sure that the puppies or kittens are growing at a healthy rate and that they are in the proper position for delivery. We can also look for any abnormalities in the uterus or placenta. Determining abnormalities early on can help us plan for a healthy delivery and provide the best care possible for your pet and her litter. Unfortunately, not all abnormalities can be detected with an ultrasound, which is why it's important to have your pet examined by our veterinarian throughout her pregnancy.

Will a Veterinarian Do an Ultrasound If My Pet Isn't Pregnant?

Believe it or not, veterinarians use ultrasound for much more than just checking on pregnant pets! We often use ultrasound to help diagnose various health conditions in both dogs and cats. For example, we may use ultrasound to take a look at your pet's organs, such as the liver, kidneys, or heart. We may also use ultrasound to help us guide needle biopsies or to check for evidence of cancer. If you're concerned about your pet's health and you think that they may benefit from an ultrasound, we can also schedule a pet exam for this as well.
